The Boys who Cried Wolf...
So this terrorism alert thing is rapidly deteriorating. Who believes anything the government says now? Who trusts the intelligence people now? Is it politics or a real plot or what can we do about it anyway? But this administration has so botched the public trust - think about what the public was willing to do after Sept 11th. Those were terrible days and no one wants to relive that. But at least we were all willing to pitch in and make the country safer. Now, not only have we devolved into partisan bickering and postering, there is very little willingness on anyone's part to trust anything the government says.
The New York Times > Washington > New Qaeda Activity Is Said to Be Major Factor in Alert: "That shifting tone may prove frustrating to the public, providing little guidance for assessing the gravity of threat information whose details remain shrouded in intelligence reports not available to anyone outside the highest ranks of the government."
